In the 80′s there was a point to point event nearby and up to 10 years ago one at Cushendun. This time round athletes swam 500m in the cool waters of the Irish sea, as we await summer to arrive, then 4k flat on the famous A2 Antrim Coast Road followed by an 8k climb up from Carnlough and returning on the same route. Just like Rostrevor, Ireland’s toughest olympic distance course this was going to be a challenge for all. A good test for race energy management and biking skill. There was a great mix from multiple Irish Champions, World and European medallist on show. Plently of newcomers and experienced age groupers determined to conquer the course and their club mates. In the men’s race Alistair Duffield, Real Triathlon exited 1st from Carl Russell, Triangle who is a former pole vaulter and leading Portrush based surfer. Carl eventually passed Alistair on the climb and had around 30 seconds starting the run. The run travelled into the town crossing the river twice and on to a 2 lap 2k riverside trail run. The going was soft and the lead changed twice before Alistair pulled slightly ahead to win by a couple of lenghts from Carl in 1.00.56. Local man Ben Morrow 3rd who along with brother Wayne 6th and Malcolm Robinson, 8th one of three Glenarm athletes in the top 8 stayed ahead of 24/7 athlete Gavin Crawford. Gavin’s club is organising the Letterkenny sprint race 20th August. Former rower Matt Allum, Olympian came home 5th ahead of fellow Olympian Graham Barr who supplies our kit via www.signatureworks.co.uk Tony McNulty, Olympian a faller at the first hurdle during last weeks Crooked Lake won the very competitive men’s vets race by a minute from Rodney Young, Triangle. Desi McHenry, Olympian cantered home next ahead of athletes from the same stable, James Cooke and Glen Pollock. Larne man Corey Irwin stayed ahead of Peter Morrison, Ian Steele and Sean Paul Hughes. There was plently of talent on show in the ladies field with probably Ireland’s greatest ever female triathlete Anne Paul, recent winner Liam Ball still keeping the young guns on the toes. Trudy Brown, Real Triathlon took the lead after in T1 and moved further ahead during the cycle to win by 2 minutes in 1.05.09 from Anne (1st Vet) and finish 7th overall. In reality Anne like many of the other vet girls can still beat the best in the open category as her 12th overall shows. New girl on the block Kerry Speers a thoroughbred from Peninsula showed her biking power and finished in 1.11.22 ahead of youth full Jo-Anne Calvert (2nd vet) and her Peninsula club mate Claire Scott a former regular race winner tempted back after 10 years in other sports and Kathryn Bell, Real Triathlon. Catherine Kerr completed the ladies vets podium in 1.17. Young Rachael Hughes, Peninsula held of Helen Murray, Hi Elbow, Julie Stewart and Andrea Thompson. Well done to ever smiling Bronagh McQuillan, Hi Elbow for finishing after a couple of punctures and also Andrew Thompson. 4th June Dungannon Half Ironman www.trilimits.co.uk
Mid Ulster hosted another Half Ironman this time at Eskragh Lough just at the end of the M1 motorway. The event was promoted and managed Bob Davidson, Levi Black, Richard Kee and Keith Clark, all extreme endurance sport members of http://trilimits.wordpress.com/ Bob and Keith, have both completed a Double Ironman and later this year are holding a Triple Ironman in N.Ireland. God only knows what the club members have tried and conquered. With plenty of Ireland's leading long distance Ironman on show this would be a good test and challenge for any forthcoming Ironman race or Galway 70.3. Andrew Hassard Hi-Elbow who went on to finish top 10, was using it to fine tune for next weekends Double Ironman in the New Forest, England. I have been in Triathlon for 25 years but still find all this stuff amazing if a touch crazy. After a couple of days of summer the lake was tepid and calm, Alistair Duffield, Real Triathlon, led the swim, everyone seemed to square the pentagon course for a fast time and all arrived refreshed for a 90km cycle on quiet roads as green as they come. Regular podium finishers, Catherine Brown, Brianne Mulvihill, both Carrick Tri and Frankfurt Ironman bound Orla McAdam, Setanta, now serving her time over the longer distance lead out of the swim. They went on to finish in this order closely follwed by Cheryl Cardwell, Triangle and then Mary Halpin and Caroline Cullen. Alistair maintained a lead on the bike with Colin Pollock, Carlow making up a few minutes and Liam Dolan moving through the field. Fast striding Liam got into the lead on the 2nd of the four lap 21.1km run winning from Alistair and Colin follow home by Mark Rafferty, Setanta, Vaughn Purnell, Belfast Legends, Paul Cullen, Tuna, Nial McDonnell, Micheal Grimes, Piranha, Andy Hassard, Hi Elbow and Dermot Mathers, Newry in 10th all within 5 hours. Donncha O SIADHAIL 1hr 5:27 & Kim Rowan 1hr.15:38
“Triathlon returned to Balbriggan on Saturday 28th May. Promoted and managed by the enthusiastic Fingal Tri Club as part of the annual week long Festival. Last time I was was here was the early 90′s when the Lunar club led by former TI President Dave Doyle staged it. I didnt actually get to start as my bonded alloy Vitus Sean Kelly replica which was like riding “al-dente” pasta compared to todays carbon steeds fell apart during the warmup. Anyhow on to more important matters and what a great turnout with over 150 for the race sponsored by Dave of www.RZ3.ie Athlone, who kindly provided the winners with a superfast Zone3 wetsuit. Another great beach start with a cool but safe and scenic 750 swim with a spectator friendly transition zone “underneath the arches” of the main railway line. After refereeing out West at Spiddal in the rain last week thank goodness the sun shone in Co.Dublin. Donncha O Siadhail dominated the swim and led the mens race for quite a while until superbiker David Kilrea (1 of 3 Kilrea’s racing today) reeled him in to win with Ciaran Gilbin having a very close battle with Dinny Collins to take 3rd. Micheal Kehoe produced the 2nd fastest run to pass Frank Kehoe for 5th. Donal Brady, Micheal McNally, Dennis O’Donnel (1st Vet) and John Darcy (2nd vet), David Power, Stephen Kildea and Derek Fagan made up the top dozen all within the next 2 mins. In the gals race Trudy Brown made up the 2mins Julieann Galloway had after the swim and went on to win from Kim Rowan and Trisha Callan. There was plenty of close racing to follow with the 9 next girls , Helen Mullarkey, Susan Brady, Ruth Murphy, Marie Sudway (1st Vet), Louise McEvoy, Juliean Galloway and Caroline Broadman, Lisa Bennet and Aiofe Broderick all with in 4 minutes of each other. Good to see Billy Kennedy who raced the original event finishing strong today in the silver class and former top contender Dave O’Connor’s (swim) team winning the relay. Great course with loads of help and support making the most of the venue with a traffic free run partly on grass. 22nd May Galway Triathlon @ Spiddal
The biggest race of the year so far and the worst weather of the year so far.
New to the Irish triathlon calendar Spidal is a fantastic location, a sprint distance cycle west of Galway. With Ironman brand coming at the other end of summer the race attracted over 500 entries. Some new, some old, some on borrowed bikes and most turned blue. With the Atlantic unleashing its power on Connemara this was going to be a day to remember. The swim was moved to a more sheltered location behind the pier. The 650 metres followed by a similar distance jog, or jig to the school playground bike park looked though enough. Just like Mastermind there was a “I have started so i’ll finish spirit” a few passed and headed to the many traditional pubs o.r the Spa Conemara doesn’t do easy and out and bike bike course would have been a challenge in the calm and sun so this one was diffently going to let athletes explore and manage their limits. The run course is a great one flatish and a mix of running through the village and on the coastal path. Fairplay to all who turned up, all the supporters who cheered till the end and all the local help and support. The results tell the competive story, tough yet rewarding. 15th May Half Ironman Collinstown, Co Westmeath

Portaferry Triathlon 18th Sept With an imposed swim restriction of 140 it meant 50 late entires missed the boat. With the swim is across the largest, deepest, most tidal sea lough in Britain and Ireland it would be interesting to see how many would start.
124 neoprene clad warriors travelled on the ferry to to do battle with the course and weather to the race start in Strangford.
Most managed to avoid the currents and whirlpools to arrive at Portaferry pier the towns answer to the Pier at Kona, Hawaii though it had 1700 bikes less and was at least 17c cooler. All made the swim inside the cut off time.
With Goretex replacing sun screen and Umbrellas out numbering sun visors this was never going to be an easy day. Real triathlon at its toughest no flat city centre bike courses and no drafting. All athletes completed the 900mt swim to the north side of Portaferry Pier. Former 1500 metre swimmer and Irish elite athlete Alistair Duffield arrived 1st. Alistair who finished top 20 in 1990 as a 17 year old swam arm to arm with Neill Ferguson who pulled away by 2 minutes during the tough 43 km cycle. Alistair now recovered after his 3.08 run at Ironman Uk and his 2.42 for 20th place at the Belfast marathon caught and past Neil on the 10km 2 lap coast road run to win in 2.01.40. Donal Mahon from Galway closed within a minute of Neil for 3rd with ever improving Donal Sheehy a close 4th. Edwin McCullagh past East Antrims Wayne Morrow for 5th and Bryce Irvine was 1st Vet and 7th overall also under 2.11 mins. Matthew Allum, Olympian in his 1st season made the top 10 seniors with Ian Brankin and Greg Foster.. Tony Mcnulty, Olympian was 2nd vet from Paul McManus, Colm Hanratty and John Young, Scotland.
Former Commonwealth athlete Charles Russel was first over 50 home in 2.18. Original organisers Desi McHenry swam 16.17, biked 1.16 and then stopped to help keep the show on the rails.
Neill Grainger, Ulster Cancer did the swim for his relay team.
Former Strangford resident and multipile Irish and European champion Trudy Brown won the girls race after passing former commonwealth games triathlete Julie Murphy, Hi Elbow, early on the bike. This was for her 6th win of the year and her 44th career win and she finished 14th overall.
Trudy is the only Irish athlete to represent Ireland at elite short and long course triathlon and elite cycling
Top vet was Kay Hack, Triangle who raced the 1990 version and was 3rd overall from Teresa Mulroe, Cheryl Caldwell, Triangle and Kate McNeill, Decathlon. Adam Speer Tri 247, Letterkenny, dominated the shorter race option with a 2 lap cycle and 1 lap run to win from Edward Hanna and Owen Jefferies with Jim Connolly winning the vets from Hamilton Coulter and James Taylor both Peninsula. Rachel Hughes, lead home the girls from former international hockey star Julie Stewart and local lass Maeve Cahill, Olympian. John Duncan's team had a race long battle with Robert Wilson's team for 1st with former leading athlete John McLaughlin managing his team to 3rd. His wife Grace who lead the females out of the water in the '90s race as a teenager did the swim, with top cyclist, Liam Curran recording the fastest bike.
Local Portaferry girls team of Lauren Quinn, Melissa Cleary and Loiuse Gilmore won the shorter course relay.
Many thanks for multiple Irish triathlon champion Eugene Galbraith for keeping the spirits up as race commentator, the PSNI, the Portaferry Ladies for catering and all the boat cover and road helpers on such a damp day.
